⚠ BREAKING: CONGRESS STILL HASN'T LEARNED TO SPELL "ACCOUNTABILITY" ⚠
So there I was, a young mother, standing in front of a strip-mall storefront with hand-painted letters that read — and I swear on my grandmother's King James Bible — "LEARING CENTER." Not LEARNING. LEARING. As in what a creep does at you over a fence. The sign promised to make my child smarter. The sign could not spell the word "learning." This, dear reader, is what we in the thinking business call a sign — and not the educational kind.
They changed the sign when people noticed, of course. They always change the sign when people notice. But you can paint over the letters. You cannot un-leer. It will always, in the eternal ledger of this Republic, be the Learing Center. And as I squinted at that corrected signage, something clicked in my tired-mom brain: I have seen this exact move before. In Washington. Constantly. For decades.
LEARING CENTERLEARNING CENTER ← (revised, post-embarrassment)
Actual inspiration for this entire essay. You cannot make this up. Lady Janice did not make this up.
📖 Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
Friends, I have decided I will not be sending my child to the Learing Center. I will be homeschooling. And the reason — the beautiful, clarifying, infuriating reason — is that when I compared what my tax dollars fund versus what that sign promised, I realized the Learing Center is not an anomaly. It is a franchise.

§ Chapter One: Minnesota, Where $250 Million Went to "Feed the Children" (Spoiler: It Did Not Feed the Children)
Let us begin in the great state of Minnesota, where a nonprofit called Feeding Our Future — and already the name should have been a warning, because grifters love noble-sounding names — managed to steal approximately $250 million in federal COVID-19 child nutrition funds. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is a federal indictment. Forty-seven defendants were charged. The scheme involved filing fraudulent claims for millions of children's meals that were never cooked, never served, and in several cases connected to sites that did not exist.
Where did the money actually go? Prosecutors documented luxury cars, commercial real estate, a hotel in Kenya, and — naturally — wire transfers abroad. The scheme ran from 2020 to 2022, right under the noses of the Minnesota Department of Education, which, to its credit, did eventually notice. About $250 million later.

"The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider." — Isaiah 1:3 (KJV)
Translation for the modern reader: Even livestock figure out who's feeding them.
Our government could not figure out that a building was empty.
Now, Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District representative, one Ilhan Omar, has not been charged with stealing nine figures — let the record reflect Lady Janice is precise. What the FEC records do show is that her campaign paid approximately $2.8 million to a political consulting firm run by the man who became her husband, Tim Mynett, and that she received a $3,500 FEC fine for using campaign funds for personal travel. Is that in the same zip code as $250 million? No. Is it the sort of thing that makes a mom in a parking lot squint and think about the Learing Center? Absolutely yes.

§ Chapter Two: California, Where They Lost More Money Than Most Nations Have
If Minnesota was an appetizer, California was the entire buffet, the building, and somehow also the parking lot. The California Employment Development Department — the EDD, which sounds like a man named Ed who should have been watching the money — managed to hemorrhage somewhere between $20 billion and $32 billion in fraudulent unemployment claims during the COVID pandemic. To put that in perspective: the entire GDP of some sovereign nations is less than what California accidentally mailed to criminals.
They paid claims to people who were incarcerated. They paid claims to people who were dead. They paid claims to cartoon characters — and this is not a metaphor, investigators found claims filed under names including that of a deceased celebrity. The state's own auditor concluded the EDD "prioritized speed over integrity." Which is a very polite California way of saying they flung money out of a moving convertible on the 405 and hoped for the best.
📖 Proverbs 28:7 (KJV)
"Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father."
📖 Proverbs 29:12 (KJV)
"If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked."
California, incidentally, is one of the states that would like to lecture you about fiscal responsibility, income inequality, and the proper way to live. Lady Janice takes notes.

§ Chapter Three: The Institution That Goes to Washington Broke and Leaves Rich — A Mystery for the Ages
Here is a thing that is true. The median net worth of a member of Congress upon entering office is respectable but unremarkable. The median net worth of a member of Congress after a decade of public service — on a salary of $174,000 per year, in cities with notoriously high costs of living — is several million dollars.
This is, technically, legal. Members of Congress are permitted to trade individual stocks. They receive information about the industries they regulate. You are a genius investor when you already know what legislation is coming. The "Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge" (STOCK) Act of 2012 was passed to address this. Then in 2013, a provision requiring Congressional staffers to disclose trades was quietly repealed. Because of course it was. Because they went to the Learing Center.
"You send a person to Washington on a teacher's salary.
They come back with a portfolio. Nobody asks questions.
This is either magic or something else."

📖 Isaiah 1:23 (KJV)
"Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them."
📖 Micah 3:11 (KJV)
"The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us."
Written approximately 2,700 years ago. About a different government. The resemblance is, as they say in literary circles, striking.

§ Chapter Four: The War — Which We Did Not Choose, Because Iran Was Going to Get a Nuclear Weapon and That Is Bad
Now we arrive at the part where the same politicians who couldn't track $250 million in chicken nuggets they never made want to weigh in on foreign policy. Lady Janice takes a breath.
Iran has been, for documented decades, the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism according to the U.S. State Department — a designation held continuously since 1984. They fund Hezbollah in Lebanon, which has killed Americans and Israelis for forty years. They fund the Houthis in Yemen, who have been firing ballistic missiles and drones at shipping lanes and at Israel. They funded, trained, and equipped Hamas. They have, on multiple occasions, come within a technical step of nuclear weapons capability.
A nuclear weapon in the hands of a government that openly chants "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" at official state functions is not, as the philosophers say, a vibe check we can afford to fail.
📖 Ecclesiastes 3:8 (KJV)
"A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."
📖 Nehemiah 4:14 (KJV)
"And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses."
The same caucus that found $250 million for meals that didn't happen and $32 billion for unemployment claims for deceased persons now finds the funding of Israel's defense or military action against the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism to be — and Lady Janice is paraphrasing here — deeply problematic. They will vote against defense appropriations and then go home to their stock portfolios. They will call it "fiscal responsibility." Lady Janice calls it something else, and that something else rhymes with "Learing Center."
"You will find the money for whatever you decide matters.
You found a quarter-billion dollars for ghost lunches.
Don't tell me there's no money for keeping a nuclear bomb
out of the hands of people who want to end Western civilization."

§ Chapter Five: History Is Repeating, And It Has Apparently Hired a Much Bigger Budget
Rome did not fall in a day. It fell because the Senate became a merchant class more interested in their own enrichment than the republic's survival. It fell because the borders were left porous while politicians argued in the Forum. It fell because they kept papering over the cracks with bread and circuses — the ancient world's version of stimulus checks and Netflix — until one day there was nothing left to paper over.
This is not Lady Janice being dramatic. This is Edward Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, 1776. This is Alexis de Tocqueville warning in 1835 that democracy contains within it the seeds of its own corruption — that elected representatives, given enough time and insufficient accountability, will vote themselves the treasury. This is the Biblical cycle of Judges: nation prospers, nation forgets God, corrupt leaders rise, nation suffers, nation repents, God restores — and then, inexplicably, the nation does the whole thing again.
📖 Judges 2:19 (KJV)
"And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way."
📖 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
We are now on steroids. The scale of the theft is different. The brazenness is different. The speed of the money movement is different. A hundred years ago a corrupt politician had to physically carry the cash. Now it moves at the speed of a wire transfer to a real estate holding company in a jurisdiction with favorable privacy laws, and by the time the Inspector General writes the report, the money has been in a Kenyan hotel for eighteen months.

§ In Conclusion: I Am Homeschooling My Child, And Here Is Why
I stood in that parking lot, looking at the corrected sign, and I thought: my child will not attend the Learing Center. Not because the tutors are bad people, necessarily — perhaps they are lovely humans who simply cannot spell the word "learning" and should not have been put in charge of teaching it.
My child will not attend the Learing Center for the same reason I do not trust the people who lost track of $100 billion in COVID relief to tell me there is "no money" for national defense. For the same reason I do not accept fiscal lectures from senators whose net worth quintupled on a $174,000 salary. For the same reason I find it surreal that the party most vocal about cutting military funding is the same one that looked at $250 million in fraudulent Minnesota child-feeding claims and said the system needs more funding, not more oversight.
When you are caught, you change the sign. But the sign will always be the Learing Center. And the American people — tired, working, praying, and apparently the only ones paying attention — we see the original sign. We remember. And some of us are raising children who will remember too, and who will be able to spell the word accountability, which, incidentally, has four syllables and appears to be well beyond the curriculum.
📖 Proverbs 14:34 (KJV)
"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."
📖 Amos 5:24 (KJV)
"But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream."
I am not Left. I am not Right.
I am a mom in a parking lot who can read a sign.
I support the troops, I oppose the thieves, I homeschool my child,
and I will never, not once, not ever,
forget that it said LEARING CENTER.
