OPENING WORD

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, what I share with you comes from a heart burdened with truth. We live in times when darkness masquerades as innocent fun, when ancient spiritual warfare dresses up in costume and knocks on our doors.

This is not about judgment—this is about discernment. This is about protecting our families, our children, and our witness for the One True God.

THE HISTORICAL ROOTS: WHERE HALLOWEEN REALLY COMES FROM

The Ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain

Halloween originated from an ancient Celtic pagan festival called Samhain (pronounced “SOW-in”), celebrated around 2,000 years ago on October 31st.

Fantasy map of Europe with glowing outlines highlights Irelland and surrounding regions. Text includes fictional names like Ceticucnc.

The Celts—who lived in what is now Ireland, Scotland, and parts of France—believed this night marked when the boundary between the living and the dead grew dangerously thin.

A person stands before glowing, ethereal figures reaching out from a cascading light curtain in a dim, mystical setting.

On this night, the Celts believed Donn, the Lord of the Dead, left his island home and traveled freely throughout the land.

A man in ornate armor and fur stands confidently in a foggy, mountainous landscape. Cloudy sky, green hues, and a majestic mood.

They thought spirits of the deceased would walk among the living, and that these spirits needed to be appeased with offerings.

What the Celts practiced:

Sacred Bonfires

Druids (Celtic priests) built massive sacred bonfires where they burned crops and sacrificed animals to Celtic deities.

A group of people in robes gather around a bright campfire under a full moon. One person raises a sword skyward. The scene is serene and mystical.

Spirit Disguises

People wore costumes made of animal heads and skins, attempting to disguise themselves from evil spirits and tell each other’s fortunes.

Three people in animal masks and fur outfits gather in a forest clearing. The scene is mystical, with soft light filtering through trees.

Appeasement Offerings

They left food and drink offerings to appease wandering spirits and fairies, believing these entities could cause mischief or harm.

Rustic cottages with thatched roofs are lined with stone paths. Candlelit tables display bread and drinks, creating a cozy evening ambiance.

Human Sacrifice

Archaeological evidence suggests both animal and human sacrifices occurred during Samhain, with victims suffering “threefold death”—wounding, burning, and drowning.

How the Church Tried to “Christianize” Paganism

In the 9th century, the Catholic Church attempted to replace Samhain by establishing November 1st as All Saints’ Day (All Hallows’ Day), and November 2nd as All Souls’ Day. The night before became known as All Hallows’ Eve—eventually shortened to “Halloween.”

But here’s the critical truth: The church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a church-approved holiday, but many pagan practices simply blended into the Christian observance rather than being eliminated. This is compromise, not transformation.

People gather in a sunlit forest, holding baskets and candles, near an altar decorated with cloth and a cross. The mood is serene.

“TRICK OR TREAT” - THE SPIRITUAL BLACKMAIL AT YOUR DOOR

The Origins of a Dark Phrase

The phrase “trick or treat” first appeared in print in Canada in the 1920s, specifically in Alberta and Saskatchewan newspapers around 1923-1927. The phrase arose from Halloween pranks when young people would demand “trick or treat” at houses—essentially a form of mild blackmail where treats were expected or mischief would follow.

But the practice itself goes back much further:

The tradition evolved from the Celtic custom of leaving token bits of harvest food outside homes on Samhain evening to placate wandering spirits and prevent them from causing destruction. Once Christianity reached Celtic regions, young unmarried men would parade around on Halloween going house to house calling for “gifts to the spirits”.

The spiritual reality:

This isn’t innocent childhood fun. The very foundation is rooted in:

  • Appeasing demonic spirits

  • Performing acts for rewards from the spirit world

  • Using threats (tricks) to manipulate blessings (treats)

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECEPTION: HOW SATAN USES PLEASURE TO BLIND US

The Enemy’s Ancient Strategy

Satan has always used pleasure, excitement, and community celebration to normalize what God calls abomination. Let’s examine his insidious tactics:

1. GRADUAL NORMALIZATION

What began as pagan worship of death has been subtly repackaged into seemingly innocent activities:

  • “Just for the kids”

  • “Community building”

  • “Harmless fun”

  • “Cultural tradition”

2. SENSORY OVERLOAD

Halloween bombards our senses, distracting us from spiritual truth with:

  • Visual excitement (decorations, costumes)

  • Taste rewards (candy, treats)

  • Social pressure (everyone’s doing it)

  • Fear of missing out (FOMO)

3. EMOTIONAL MANIPULATION

The enemy targets our deepest desires and fears:

  • Desire to belong

  • Fear of being “different”

  • Love for our children

  • Nostalgia for our own childhoods

The Pleasure Trap

When something feels good, brings joy, or creates happy memories, we naturally lower our spiritual guard. But Scripture warns us:

Proverbs 14:12 (made clear for today): “There is a path that seems right to a person, that appears innocent and fun, but in the end it leads to spiritual death.”

A sunlit forest path winds through dense greenery and arched trees, creating a serene, mystical tunnel.
2 Corinthians 11:14 (in plain language): “Don’t be surprised—even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, making evil look beautiful, fun, and good.”
Sculpted angel with large white wings and long hair stands majestically in a dark setting, illuminated by a spotlight above.

THE DECEPTION

We see children happily participating in activities that seem innocent, even as parents watch approvingly. This pleasant facade hides a deeper spiritual reality.

THE STRATEGY

The enemy uses these joyful experiences to cloud our judgment, making us overlook the spiritual implications and defending practices that are not of God.

THE TRAGEDY

The psychology is simple: If Satan can make us enjoy darkness, we’ll defend it. We’ll rationalize it. We’ll even teach our children to participate in it.
