THE SEPARATION LIE: EVERSON V. BOARD OF EDUCATION (1947)

How a 5-4 Supreme Court decision by FDR's appointees weaponized Jefferson's words to redefine American religious freedom
The landmark Everson v. Board of Education case was decided on February 10, 1947, with a narrow 5-4 vote.
At its heart was a New Jersey law that permitted local school districts to reimburse parents for the cost of bus transportation to both public and Catholic private schools.
Justice Hugo Black, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937, authored the majority opinion. In his reasoning, Black famously quoted Thomas Jefferson's 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptists, asserting that it described a "wall of separation between church and state."
This was the first time this specific phrase was used in Supreme Court history to interpret the First Amendment's Establishment Clause.
While the decision ultimately upheld the New Jersey law (finding it a general welfare benefit, not direct aid to religion), it critically established the precedent that the Establishment Clause applies to state governments through the 14th Amendment.
Black's powerful declaration solidified this new interpretation: "The First Amendment has erected a wall between church and state. That wall must be kept high and impregnable."
Crucially, this interpretation diverged significantly from the Founders' original intent. Jefferson's letter was primarily about protecting churches from government interference, not about removing religious expression from public life.
THE MISINTERPRETATION
While this case came AFTER FDR's death (1945), it built on the foundation HE laid!
Everson v. Board of Education (1947):
What happened:
Supreme Court case about public funding for religious school transportation
Justice Hugo Black (FDR appointee!) wrote the majority opinion
He quoted Jefferson's "wall of separation between church and state" letter
Applied it to mean religion must be REMOVED from public life
This was a TOTAL MISINTERPRETATION!
WHAT JEFFERSON ACTUALLY MEANT:
Thomas Jefferson's letter (January 1, 1802) to Danbury Baptists:
"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State."
Jefferson's point:
The government cannot establish a national denomination (no "Church of America" like "Church of England")
The government cannot prohibit the free exercise of religion
The "wall" protects the CHURCH FROM GOVERNMENT (not government from church!)
Jefferson wanted to keep government OUT of church!
NOT keep church out of government!
BIG, BIG DIFFERENCE!
THE DISTORTION
Justice Black (FDR appointee) REVERSED Jefferson's meaning!
He claimed:
Religion must be PRIVATE
Government must be SECULAR
Churches must stay out of the public square
Separation means NO religious influence on government
This is the OPPOSITE of what the Founders intended!
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE VIOLATED: RULERS SHOULD SEEK GOD'S WISDOM
Proverbs 8:15-16 (KJV): "By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth."
"By ME" = By WISDOM (which is personified as speaking)
Biblical wisdom should guide rulers!
Removing God from government = Removing wisdom from government!
Psalm 2:10-12 (KJV): "Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all that put their trust in him."
Kings and judges are commanded to:
Be WISE
Be INSTRUCTED
SERVE THE LORD
Kiss the Son (submit to Jesus)
The separation of church and state doctrine says:
Kings and judges must be SECULAR
Must IGNORE God's law
Must NOT serve the Lord in their official capacity
This violates Scripture!
HOW AMERICANS WERE DUPED: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MANIPULATION
CREATE CRISIS (REAL OR PERCEIVED)
FDR used fear! "Banking crisis!" - People panicked! When people are afraid, they surrender liberty for security!
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin
But FDR bet Americans would choose safety over liberty! He was RIGHT!
PROMISE SOLUTIONS
"I alone can fix it!" FDR positioned himself as SAVIOR! Only HIS programs could save America! Only HIS government could help! This made people DEPENDENT on the government!
WELFARE! WELFARE!! WELFARE!!
USE COMPASSIONATE LANGUAGE
FDR's programs had NICE names: "Relief" programs, "Recovery" acts, "Security" administration, "Works" progress. Who could oppose "relief" or "security"? But behind the nice names was POWER GRAB!
DEMONIZE OPPONENTS
Anyone who opposed FDR was: "Heartless" (don't care about suffering), "Selfish" (care only about money), "Backwards" (stuck in old ways), "Obstructionist" (blocking progress). This silenced opposition!
EXPAND SLOWLY
FDR didn't create ALL agencies at once! He did it GRADUALLY! Like boiling a frog: Put the frog in cold water, Heat gradually, the frog doesn't notice, by the time it's hot, the frog is boiled! Americans didn't notice the government growing because it was GRADUAL!
BIBLICAL WARNING: BEWARE DECEPTION
Matthew 24:4 (KJV): "And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you."
"Take HEED" = Be watchful, alert, vigilant! Don't be DECEIVED!
2 Thessalonians 2:3 (KJV): "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition."
"Let NO MAN deceive you BY ANY MEANS" - FDR used MANY MEANS to deceive! Crisis! Compassion! Gradual expansion! All DECEPTION!
Ephesians 5:6 (KJV): "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience."
"Vain words" = Empty promises, false assurances. FDR's campaign promises = VAIN WORDS!

THE SPIRITUAL DECLINE

When righteous rule → People REJOICE! When wicked rule → People MOURN!

RESIST GOVERNMENT OVERREACH

WORD #1: THE SYSTEM FDR BUILT IS COLLAPSING
Psalm 127:1 (KJV): "Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."
FDR built without God! Therefore, it WILL collapse! We're seeing it now in 2026!
WORD #2: JUDGMENT ON DECEIVERS
Proverbs 19:5 (KJV): "A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape."
FDR bore false witness! He spoke lies! He didn't escape judgment (died suddenly in office)! Those continuing his deception will face judgment, too!
WORD #3: RETURN TO BIBLICAL FOUNDATION OR PERISH
