OPENING WORD: A MYSTERY UNVEILED

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, what I’m about to share with you will transform how you read the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts forever. For nearly 2,000 years, scholars have debated the identity of “Most Excellent Theophilus”—the man to whom

Luke addressed over 26% of the New Testament. But the truth has been hiding in plain sight, confirmed by archaeology, history, and Scripture itself.

This revelation is prophetic for 2025 because God is about to do what He did through Theophilus: He’s about to reach the religious elite, the gatekeepers, the high priests of our modern systems, and shake them with the truth of Jesus Christ.

This message is written in love and unity to ALL believers—no matter your denomination, your background, or your tradition. We serve ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism. What unites us is far greater than what divides us.

PART 1: THE NAME THAT MEANS “FRIEND OF GOD”

What Does Theophilus Mean?

Theophilus comes from two Greek words:

Theos (Θεός)

God

Philos (φίλος)

Friend, Lover, Beloved

So Theophilus means: “Friend of God” or “Beloved of God” or “Lover of God”

Some have argued that “Theophilus” wasn’t a real person—that Luke was writing to every “friend of God.” But beloved, that interpretation falls apart when you look at the evidence.

The Evidence of a Real Person

Luke 1:3 (In Clear Language):

“Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, MOST EXCELLENT Theophilus...”

Acts 1:1 (Plain Truth):

“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach...”

Notice the difference? In Luke, Theophilus is called “Most Excellent” (Greek: kratiste)—a title of honor used for Roman governors and high-ranking officials. By the time Luke writes Acts, the title is dropped. He’s just “Theophilus.”

What happened? Theophilus lost his position. And beloved, I’m about to show you who he was and why it matters for YOUR life today.

PART 2: THE STUNNING ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY

The Ossuary That Confirms Everything

In the 1980s, archaeologists discovered an ossuary (a bone burial box) in Jerusalem with a shocking inscription:

“Yehoḥanah (Johanna) daughter of Yehoḥanan (John) son of Thefilus (Theophilus) the High Priest”

Ancient stone sarcophagus with engraved script, displayed under spotlights in a dimly lit museum. The mood is historical and mysterious.

This wasn’t just any Theophilus. This was Theophilus THE HIGH PRIEST.

The discovery was published in the Israel Exploration Journal (1986) by scholars D. Barag and D. Flusser, confirming that a High Priest named Theophilus existed and had a son named John, who had a daughter named Johanna.

Now watch this:

The name Johanna appears TWICE in the Gospel of Luke—and she’s not just mentioned casually. She’s featured prominently in the resurrection account.

Luke 8:3 introduces her:

“Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”

Luke 24:10 places her at the empty tomb:

“It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.”

Why would Luke emphasize Johanna? Because she was Theophilus’ granddaughter—an eyewitness he would know and trust!

PART 3: WHO WAS THEOPHILUS BEN ANANUS?

The Historical Record from Josephus

The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus documented the High Priests who served in the Second Temple period. According to his Antiquities of the Jews, Theophilus ben Ananus

(son of Annas) served as High Priest from 37-41 AD.

Crowds in ancient robes stand before a grand temple with arches in the light. Columns frame the scene, atmosphere is solemn and historic.

Let me break down this family tree because it’s explosive:

THE FAMILY OF ANNAS - The Most Powerful Religious Dynasty in

Jerusalem

Annas (Ananus) - High Priest 6-15 AD

(mentioned in Luke 3:2, John 18:13, Acts 4:6)

Son: Eleazar - High Priest 16-17 AD

Son-in-law: Caiaphas - High Priest 18-36 AD

(the one who tried Jesus!)

Son: Jonathan - High Priest 36-37 AD and 44 AD

Son: THEOPHILUS - High Priest 37-41 AD

(Luke’s addressee!)

Son: Matthias - High Priest around 43 AD

Son: Ananus II - High Priest 62 AD

(executed James, Jesus’ brother)

Grandson: Matthias ben Theophilus - High Priest 65-66 AD

(second-to-last before Temple destruction)

This family controlled the High Priesthood for over 50 years!

What This Means

Theophilus ben Ananus was:

The son of Annas (who interrogated Jesus - John 18:13)

The brother-in-law of Caiaphas (who condemned Jesus to death)

High Priest during the early church period (37-41 AD)

A Sadducee (didn’t believe in resurrection, angels, or afterlife)

Member of the wealthiest, most powerful family in Judea

Part of the religious elite who crucified Jesus

And Luke wrote the Gospel and Acts specifically to HIM.

Church, do you understand what this means? Luke wasn’t writing to a random Roman official. He was writing to a member of the family that killed Jesus. He was reaching the PERSECUTORS with the message of the PERSECUTED.
