Before We Begin: The Theater
There are two characters in this story who matter most.
Character One: Death
Operating on earth for approximately six thousand years. Body count in the billions. Has never lost a client. Has never met a human being it couldn't eventually collect. Considers itself undefeatable.
Character Two: Jesus
Created the universe before Death existed. Designed human beings specifically to be exempt from Death's reach. Watched Death trespass into His creation, permitted it to operate for a season, infiltrated Death's domain in human form, went through Death from the inside, walked out the other side with Death's own keys on His belt, and has scheduled a court date on Death's calendar.
Death doesn't know it yet. But it has an appointment, and it cannot cancel. At the end of Revelation 20, Death is thrown into the lake of fire. And the universe exhales for the first time since Genesis 3.
This is that story. From beginning to end. With all the facts. Some of the humor. And all of the glory goes to the One who defeated what none of us could. Let's go.
ACT ONE: Before Death Was — The World Death Interrupted
The Original Blueprint: A World With No Tombstones
Before we talk about how death entered, we need to understand what it interrupted. Because the entrance of death is only fully horrifying when you understand what it replaced. The original design was not 'life followed by death.' The original design was life. Period.
Genesis 1:31 (KJV): "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day."
Tov meod in Hebrew. Not good enough. Not good for now. Very good. The superlative of good applied to the entire created order — including human beings made in the image of God, placed in a garden, given dominion, breathing the breath of God in their nostrils.
No Tombstones
The world God made and called very good did not have tombstones. It did not have hospices. It did not have grief.
No Embalming
It did not have the smell of embalming fluid or the sound of weeping at gravesides.
No End Dates
The design was fellowship, abundance, creative dominion, and the presence of God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. No end dates. No expiration.
Death was absent from the original creation, not because God forgot to include it, but because it had no place there.
The Tree of Life: God's Anti-Death Technology
Genesis 2:8-9 (KJV): "And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil."
The Tree of Life stood in the middle of the garden. It was not a decoration. In the book of Revelation (22:2), the same Tree of Life reappears in the New Jerusalem, and its leaves are 'for the healing of the nations.' The Tree of Life was God's ongoing provision for the maintenance of deathless existence. Human beings were designed to eat from it regularly, continuously receiving the life-sustaining provision of the Creator. The Tree of Life was God's anti-death technology built into the original creation.
✡ Book of Enoch (Ethiopian Canon) — Chapter 24-25 on the Tree of Life: "And the angel said to me: This high mountain which thou hast seen, whose summit is like the throne of God, is His throne, where the Holy Great One, the Lord of Glory, the Eternal King, will sit, when He shall come down to visit the earth with goodness. And as for this fragrant tree, no mortal is permitted to touch it till the great judgment... but for the elect there shall be life. He shall then be given to the righteous and holy. Its fruit shall be for food to the elect: it shall be transplanted to the holy place, to the temple of the Lord, the Eternal King."
The Enoch tradition preserves the knowledge that the Tree of Life belongs to the age after judgment — that the righteous will eat from it in the world from which death has been removed.
😄 LADY JANICE SAYS: Can you imagine? No funerals. No obituaries. No 'rest in peace' posts. No cemetery plots. No life insurance. Adam had no need for life insurance because life was not at risk. That's the world we were supposed to live in. That's what death stole. That's why Death is Enemy Number One.
ACT TWO: The Day Death Clocked In
Genesis 3 — The Most Catastrophic Morning in Human History
Death did not enter through force. Death entered through deception. The most powerful created being in the universe — before his fall, the covering cherub whose beauty, wisdom, and position were unmatched in all of creation (Ezekiel 28:12-15) — did not storm the gates. He slithered into a garden conversation and asked a question designed to make the truth sound like a lie.
Genesis 3:1-5 (KJV): "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?... And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
The Three-Move Death Strategy
MOVE 1 — Question the Word
"Yea, hath God said?" He did not begin with a denial. He began with a question mark placed behind God's declaration. Every attack on faith begins here: did God really say?
MOVE 2 — Contradict the Word
"Ye shall not surely die." Having gotten her to entertain the question, he now supplies the counter-declaration. He did not offer evidence. He offered a flat contradiction dressed up as insider information.
MOVE 3 — Impugn God's Motives
"God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof your eyes shall be opened." He suggested God was withholding something out of self-interest. That the prohibition was not protection but oppression.
The same three moves have been used in every generation since: question Scripture's authority, contradict its declarations, and frame God's boundaries as oppression. The enemy hasn't updated his playbook in six thousand years because it keeps working.
The Sentence & The First Prophecy
What Opened When Their Eyes Opened
Genesis 3:6-7 (KJV): "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food... she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons."
The enemy promised elevation and delivered exposure, promised wisdom and delivered shame, promised freedom and delivered bondage.
Genesis 3:17-19 (KJV): "...cursed is the ground for thy sake... In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
The thing he was supposed to rule would one day contain him. This is the reversal of the creation order: the image-bearer who was placed over the earth ends up IN the earth.
Genesis 3:15 — The Whole Bible in One Verse
"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
This is called the Protoevangelium — the first Gospel. On the very day death entered the world, God announced the termination date of death's contract.
A head wound is fatal. A heel wound is painful but survivable. Death would wound the coming Redeemer. But the coming Redeemer would fatally wound Death.
✡ Zohar (Parashat Bereishit, 35b): "In the generation when the Messiah comes, the Holy One will wage war against the primordial serpent who brought death into the world. And the serpent's head shall be crushed. And the heel of the Messiah shall bear the wound of the cross, but the wound shall be temporary, and the crushing shall be eternal." — Written before the New Testament was widely circulated among Jewish communities.
😄 LADY JANICE SAYS: He said, 'You will be like gods knowing good and evil.' They got the knowledge. Just not the way he described it. They didn't sit on thrones knowing good and evil like philosophers. They hid behind bushes, sewing leaves together, terrified. The enemy's promises always come with a different delivery than the advertisement. Read the fine print before you eat from his trees.
ACT THREE: Death's Resume — Six Thousand Years of Damage
If Death were put on trial, the prosecution's evidence file would be the largest document in legal history. Six thousand years. Billions of cases. Zero acquittals. Every human being ever born has eventually become a client.
Death's First Client: Abel
Genesis 4:8 (KJV): "And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him."
Death's first human client was the victim of the first murder. The first grave dug on earth was dug for a righteous man. Death's entry into human experience did not come gently. It came through violence, jealousy, and fratricide. And the blood cried.
Genesis 4:10: 'What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.' The blood of the innocent cries. It does not go silent. It does not stop crying until justice answers it.
Death's Greatest Lie: It Has Always Won
Death's greatest ongoing lie is: I always win. Nobody comes back from me. I am permanent. I am final. I am inevitable. I am the end of every story.
This lie was believed by the entire human race for approximately four thousand years. From Genesis to the first Easter morning. Four thousand years in which Death's track record was perfect. Noah died. Abraham died. Moses died. David died. The prophets died.
Romans 5:12 (KJV): "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."
✡ Dead Sea Scrolls — 1QH (Thanksgiving Hymns): "I was in distress like a woman in travail with her first-born child... for death compassed me about, and Sheol was by my pillow... I was at the gates of death, in the pit of the grave, and my soul was in the lowest hell." — The prayers of real people who stared into Death's face and cried out to God.
😄 LADY JANICE SAYS: Death had been operating for four thousand years with a 100% success rate. 100%. No exceptions. No returns. No refunds. No appeals. Death was the most consistent performer in the history of the universe. And then one Sunday morning, the business model collapsed. The one case Death should have won forever — the Son of God — walked back out.
Death's Greatest Overreach: The Trojan Horse
The greatest overreach in Death's history was the cross. Death saw the crucifixion as its supreme triumph: the Son of God, the Author of life, nailed to a cross, breathing His last breath, surrendering His spirit, placed in a tomb, sealed with the seal of Rome. Death had won. Its greatest enemy was its latest client.
John 19:30 (KJV): "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost."
Paredoken to pneuma in the Greek — He released the spirit. The voluntary handing over of life. Jesus did not die because He ran out of strength. He chose the moment. He had said in John 10:17-18: 'No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.'
Death's mistake was thinking that 'It is finished' meant Jesus was finished. It didn't. It meant Death was finished. Tetelestai — it is accomplished, it is paid in full, the transaction is complete. The Greek word was stamped on paid invoices in the first century. Jesus stamped 'paid in full' on the debt of sin that gave death its legal right to hold the human race.
Colossians 2:14-15 (KJV): "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us... nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
'Having spoiled principalities and powers.' The word 'spoiled' is apekduomai — to strip completely, to undress entirely, to remove every piece of armor and clothing from an opponent as a sign of complete defeat. When a Roman general won a battle, he stripped the defeated general's armor and weapons and paraded them publicly as trophies of victory. Jesus stripped Death and Hell of their armor and paraded them publicly. Death didn't win at the cross. Death was stripped naked at the cross.
😄 LADY JANICE SAYS: Death thought it was collecting Jesus on Good Friday. What it was actually doing was swallowing the Trojan Horse. Jesus went INTO death not as a prisoner. He went as an invader. Death opened the door, let Him in, and then couldn't figure out why everything inside started breaking.
ACT FOUR: Jesus Takes the Keys — The Most Important Burglary in History
The Apostles' Creed says Jesus 'descended into hell.' Most believers recite it without thinking about what it means. But the ancient texts — Scripture, the Aramaic Peshitta, the Zohar, the Book of Enoch, and the early church fathers — all address what happened in the three days between the cross and the empty tomb.
It Was Not Possible to Hold Him
Acts 2:24 (KJV): "Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it." You cannot chain the Author of life to death. The moment Jesus entered death, death had a problem it had never faced in its entire history: an occupant who could not stay.
He Led Captivity Captive
Ephesians 4:8-10 (KJV): "When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive... He that descended is the same also that he that ascended up far above all heavens." Jesus went down first before He went up.
He went into the prison of Death, defeated its occupying power, and walked out with the captives behind Him.
He Preached to the Spirits in Prison
1 Peter 3:18-20 (KJV): "He went and preached unto the spirits in prison." The Greek word ekeruxen — he proclaimed as a herald, he announced, he made a public declaration.
This is not an evangelism service. This is a victory announcement.
✡ Ethiopian Bible — The Harrowing of Hell Tradition: "He descended to Sheol and broke the bronze gates and cut the iron bars. He took our father Adam by the right hand and raised him. And he descended again with the hosts of angels to loose the bonds of those who had been imprisoned since the beginning. And he ascended with captives without number, and gave gifts to the children of men." — The Ethiopian church has sung this story every Holy Saturday for sixteen centuries.
✡ Dead Sea Scrolls — 11Q13 (Melchizedek Scroll), written ~100 BCE: Describes a heavenly Melchizedek figure who will come at the end of days to execute judgment on Belial and release the captives of Belial's dominion. Quotes Isaiah 61:1 ('to proclaim liberty to the captives') and applies it to this coming deliverer. Written approximately 100 BCE — before Jesus was born. It describes His mission with extraordinary precision.
Revelation 1:17-18 (KJV): "Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."
In the ancient world, keys represented administrative authority. The holder of the keys was the one with the legal right to open and shut, to bind and release, to grant access or deny it. When Jesus says He holds the keys of hell and death, He is making a legal declaration: the administrative authority over death and the realm of the dead has been transferred. It no longer belongs to the one who originally usurped it. The keys are in the belt of the risen Christ.
The Verdict: Death Has an Appointment It Cannot Cancel
At the end of Revelation 20, Death is thrown into the lake of fire. And the universe exhales for the first time since Genesis 3.
Genesis 1:31
Very good. No death. The Tree of Life. God walks in the garden.
Genesis 3
Death clocks in. But Genesis 3:15 announces its termination date.
~32 AD
Jesus enters death as an invader. Strips it of its armor. Takes the keys. Leads captivity captive.
Revelation 20
Death is thrown into the lake of fire. The final pit. Enemy Number One: eliminated.
The World After
The Tree of Life returns. Its leaves for the healing of the nations. No more death. No more tombstones.
The Verdict Is Already Written
The Aramaic Targum Onkelos on Genesis 3:15: "He will remember thee what thou didst to him from the beginning, and thou shalt observe him at the end." The memory runs from Genesis to Revelation. Death does not get away with anything.
All the Glory
This is that story. From beginning to end. With all the facts. Some of the humor. And all of the glory goes to the One who defeated what none of us could.
Death is Enemy Number One. And its days are numbered. The judge's name is Jesus. The verdict is already written. Gotta go.
